Alphabet Playlist - "Live it Out" by Metric

We were gonna live it out.

This song reminds me of Veronica. From the album Live it Out.
I debated about posting the acoustic or live version. This one is sad and beautiful, the other is upbeat and edgy. Hope you enjoy!

Brominated Vegetable Oil in Soda

"Compounds like these that are in widespread use probably should be reexamined periodically with newer technologies to ensure that there aren't effects that would have been missed by prior methods," said Charles Vorhees, a toxicologist at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, who studied BVO's neurological effects in the early 1980s. "I think BVO is the kind of compound that probably warrants some reexamination."

Thought Catalog Snippet

From an article titled "If Seasons were Boyfriends"

The Summer Boyfriend is easy breezy. You can find him on a fire escape at someone’s house party, smoking cigarettes and clutching a sangria. He is the definition of someone you don’t want when the weather gets cold but he’s perfect for the warmer temperatures. You envision him on a beach with the sand in his toes. You see him shirtless and drinking margaritas on a rooftop. The sun hits his skin in the most perfect way and it will be hard for you to not have sex with him every moment of every day. That’s The Summer Boyfriend’s job though—to give you multiple orgasms a day—and the rest is just light and fluffy like clouds. You only like him in June, July, and August. When Labor Day hits, feelings will shift and you’ll feel the need to exit the relationship ASAP. He’ll walk you to the train on the first day you need to wear a cardigan and you’ll know it’s done. The second it gets cold, so do the feelings. “I don’t want to see you in sweaters. I want to see you in a tank top. It’s been real, dude.”

Quote

"You ask me about regret? Let me tell you a few things about regret, my darling. There is no end to it. You cannot find the beginning of the chain that brought us from here to there. Should you regret the whole chain, and the air in between, or each link separately, as if you could uncouple them? Do you regret the beginning which ended so badly, or just the ending itself?" -White Oleander.

Gospel Gossip - "Pre Med"

I had the last half of this song stuck in my head ALL morning and could not remember the name of the song or the band. By some miracle, I correctly guessed my Myspace password (haven't been on there in a while) and rediscovered my old favorite song by Gospel Gossip, Pre Med. They're from Northfield, MN!

Pre-Med (Just In Case)

They met freshman year, a lucky chance.
She was passed out almost when he asked her to dance.
And he was from New York, and doing pre med just in case.

They said, "we might not be in love, but it's close.
Settling's bad, but being alone hurts the most."
Four fast years of pavement on a ring.
Med school didn't work out, so he had extra money.

And it's too late to regret it.
But you know, we wouldn't do it again.

And he said, "baby I know you wanna move to the city.
But I got a job that at the minute pays decent money.
I know you wanna write, but the time is wrong.
You can get a newspaper job, maybe when the kids are old."

And she said, "baby I just wanna be seventeen again.
This house is a coffin, believe me, I'm so dead.
Here's to your coffee. Here's to your raincoats.
I hear the storm coming but I can't see the sky from this window."

Led Zeppelin "That's the Way"

Obsessed since 2004.

And yesterday I saw you kissing tiny flowers,
But all that lives is born to die.
And so I say to you that nothing really matters,
And all you do is stand and cry.

I don't know how I'm gonna tell you, I can't play with you no more,
I don't know how I'm gonna do what mama told me, My friend, the boy next door.
I can't believe what people saying, You're gonna let your hair hang down,
I'm satisfied to sit here working all day long, You're in the darker side of town.

And when I'm out I see you walking, why don't your eyes see me?
Could it be you've found another game to play, what did mama say to me?

That's The way, oh, that's the way it ought to be,
Yeah, yeah, mama say that's the way it ought to stay.

And yesterday I saw you standing by the river,
And weren't those tears that filled your eyes?
And all the fish that lay in dirty water dying,
Had they got you hypnotized?

And yesterday I saw you kissing tiny flowers,
But all that lives is born to die.
And so I say to you that nothing really matters,
And all you do is stand and cry.

I don't know what to say about it,
When all your ears have turned away,
But now's the time to look and look again at what you see,
Is that the way it ought to stay?

That's the way... That's the way it ought to be.
Oh don't you know now, mama said.. that's the way it's gonna stay, yeah.

Alphabet Playlist - Bright Eyes "Land Locked Blues"

The first time I heard this song in 2006, I didn't like it. Now it gives me goosebumps every time.

If you walk away, I’ll walk away
First tell me which road you will take
I don’t want to risk our paths crossing some day
So you walk that way, I’ll walk this way

...

And the world’s got me dizzy again
You think after 22 years I’d be used to the spin
And it only feels worse when I stay in one place
So I’m always pacing around or walking away
I keep drinking the ink from my pen
And I’m balancing history books up on my head
But it all boils down to one quotable phrase
If you love something, give it away

Old Crow Medicine Show - "My Good Gal"

Sometimes Old Crow gets a little too country for me, but my handful of favorite Old Crow songs (Wagon Wheel and the sad ones) are pure gold.
Case in point:

Well she drug me down
Tossed me round
Slammed my name all over town
My good gal ain't no good to me
She makes true love more like misery
Now I'm walkin' hunched
I get drunk a bunch
Would you sucker up and take a punch

My good gal ain't no good to me
And I think I've acted reasonably
Ah but I miss her...
And all that I wish for her...
Is the time of day
Don't go out of your way
Just leave me with a stack of them bills to pay

My good gal ain't no good to me
And she don't even have the courtesy
To shut the door
When she's been playin a whore
Don't want to see his rags piled on the floor

My good gal ain't no good to me
And I only wish that she could see
That I miss her
Ah but I miss her...
And all I have is a picture...of her
It was taken years ago
I was a kid you know
Just leanin' up against that El Dorado

My good gal ain't no good to me
And the final word belongs to me
Because I drove her out of town
And I shot her down
And I left her there in the cold, cold ground
My good gal ain't no good to me
Not even in her memory

Bob Marley - "Chances Are"

This song takes me back to the summer before senior year of college, my roommate at the time said she wasn't a huge Bob Marley fan, but she really liked this song. Only part of that made sense to me ...

"It Keeps Me Up" - Museum Pieces

It Keeps Me Up, Museum Pieces, video, lyrics

Oh it keeps me up
Oh it keeps me up
Oh it keeps me up

Over and over
Over and over
Over and over

It takes away the golden junk?
Every ship is sinking or it has sunk
At school it’s either pass or flunk
And every man could be a priest or a monk

But getting high and getting drunk I love em
getting high and getting drunk I love em
getting high and getting drunk I love em

Over and over
Over and over

Yea it keeps me up
Oh it keeps me up
Oh it keeps me up

Over and over
Over and over

"One Time Too Many" - Phoenix

This song makes no sense but at the same time, perfect sense. You have to give Phoenix some leeway because English is not their native language.

Quiet please, turn it off, shut it down
Slow down your tan, I'm gonna miss you a lot
There goes your tears again, this is no fun
There goes your tears again as you walk away...
Then it's hard to tell what kind, they do look alike

Oh no, that ain't what I said
Oh no, that ain't what I said

Always trying to fall asleep to make my way out
Looking at the ceiling, I'm counting the days
There goes your man, is down to the bottom
There goes your man, is willing to cooperate
Then it's hard to tell you kindly that ain't what I'm like

Ooh, Guess I'd better find us a way out
"One time too many" I said
It's a long way to look alike
That is what you say

Slow down your tan
I'm gonna miss you a lot
There goes your ideas have been stolen
They wave their hands goodbye as you walk away
Then it's hard to tell what kind, they do look alike

Guess I better find us a way out
"One time too many" I said
It's a long way to look alike
That is what you say

Alphabet Playlist - "Instrumental" - Box Car Racer

I had forgotten all about this song, but when it came on I had this intense flashback to freshman year of college - doing homework, eating oatmeal, doing more homework, with this on in the background. No, that's not quite all I did freshman year. To the nostalgia playlist you go, Instrumental!

Bob Marley Quote

Courtesy of Alexandra:
"He’s not perfect. You aren’t either, and the two of you will never be perfect. But if he can make you laugh at least once, causes you to think twice, and if he admits to being human and making mistakes, hold onto him and give him the most you can. He isn’t going to quote poetry, he’s not thinking about you every moment, but he will give you a part of him that he knows you could break. Don’t hurt him, don’t change him, and don’t expect for more than he can give. Don’t analyze. Smile when he makes you happy, yell when he makes you mad, and miss him when he’s not there. Love hard when there is love to be had. Because perfect guys don’t exist, but there’s always one guy that is perfect for you."

Summer is over?

I found this picture and quote here, on a dormant blog that (although it appears to be compiled by a somewhat angst-ridden teenage girl) contains many gems.

"And I’m going to do something this summer. I’m going to change something. I’m going to make someone never forget me. I’m going to make this summer worth my time."

Quote

"You take a born-pretty girl and you dress her up in pretty things, curl her pretty hair and she becomes empty, vacuous. The only thing she can claim as a self identity is her one dimensional beauty. But take a pretty girl and throw some shit on her, and make her fight her way out of it and she'll grow to be other-worldy radiant and a force to be reckoned with."

Alphabet Playlist - "If I Fall" - Aqualung

Perfection.

Swept away
By the wonder of it all
So amazed
Never saw it coming
Left me dazed
And I don't know where to turn

Here and now
Seems I'm standing on the edge
Looking down
I can clearly see your face
In the crowd
Makes me feel I'm not alone

If I fall
Will you catch me?

Seems to me
I'm exactly where I dreamt
I would be
And the view from here is
Something to see
But I need a hand to hold on to

If I fall
Will you catch me?

Lyrics

I can't stop listening to "I Will Light You on Fire" (posted a few days ago).

And you know this requires discussion
Or preferably, a concussion
Why can't we talk about something good?

Alphabet Playlist - "I Melt With You" - Modern English

This song is out of order because it was incorrectly named "I'll Stop the World and Melt With You" but I am still posting it.
I want someone to stand outside my window and play this on a boombox. This song reeks of nostalgia, even though I wasn't alive when it was released.

Alphabet Playlist - "I'll Follow the Sun" - The Beatles

The first time I really listened to this song (and every time since), it reminded me of Veronica.

One day you'll look to see I've gone
For tomorrow may rain,
so I'll follow the sun

Some day you'll know I was the one
But tomorrow may rain,
so I'll follow the sun

And now the time has come
and, my love, I must go
And though I lose a friend
In the end you will know, oh

One day you'll find that I have gone
But tomorrow may rain,
so I'll follow the sun
But tomorrow may rain,
so I'll follow the sun

And now the time has come
and, my love, I must go
And though I lose a friend
In the end you will know, oh

One day you'll find that I have gone
But tomorrow may rain,
so I'll follow the sun

Alphabet Project - "I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You" - Colin Hay

The top rated youtube comment on this video says "Playing something like this requires great heart, whiskey, love, and honesty."
Most of the best things in life do, I guess.

I drink good coffee every morning
Comes from a place that's far away
And when I'm done I feel like talking
Without you here there is less to say
I don't want you thinking I'm unhappy
What is closer to the truth
That if I lived till I was 102
I just don't think I'll ever get over you
I'm no longer moved to drink strong whiskey
'Cause I shook the hand of time and I knew
That if I lived till I could no longer climb my stairs
I just don't think I'll ever get over you
Your face it dances and it haunts me
Your laughter's still ringing in my ears
I still find pieces of your presence here
Even after all these years
But I don't want you thinking I don't get asked to dinner
'Cause I'm here to say that I sometimes do
Even though I may soon feel the touch of love
I just don't think I'll ever get over you
If I lived till I was 102
I just don't think I'll ever get over you

"So edit this out?"
"Definitely."

Alphabet Project - "How It Ends" by DeVotchKa

It may have seemed that I forgot about the alphabet project! Not the case. Once again, I am going through all of my iTunes music alphabetically and am posting highlights and discoveries here.

Today's discovery is "How It Ends" by DeVotchKa. This is especially notable because (at the risk of losing one to three of my three readers) I don't really like DeVotchKa. I find myself frequently skipping past their songs, but this song is unlike most of the others: for one, the accordion that often overwhelms me is almost nonexistent. The lyrics are sad and pretty and I looove the string instruments. The video doesn't thrill me, but I am amused and slightly confused by the "Up Next" youtube video option: "Somewhere Over the Rainbow by that giant Hawaiian man.

I hope you enjoy:

Fun fact: DeVotchKa was named after the Russian word for "girl," devochka (девочка).

Alphabet Project - "Hospital" by Lydia

My new idea for keeping this blog alive will reveal a certain degree of my OCD. For the past few months, I have been sporadically but systematically going through all the songs in my iTunes . . . alphabetically.
It has unearthed a few gems, and I am going to try to post the highlights here.

Since I am on the H's, today I discovered "Hospital" by Lydia. It is off their album Illuminate (2008), which I'm not as familiar with but like so far. I spent a few years of my life being obsessed with the album This December; It's One More And I'm Free (2005 - please check it out). And I just found out there's a new album I don't have yet! Assailants . . . I must have it.

I'm going to take a second here to praise the work of Monsanto. Good people. Doing a fine job protecting our nation's food supplies with their insect-resistant Frankenstein corn. They don't coddle pests and I respect that.

A Farewell to Arms excerpt

I had gone to no such place but to the smoke of cafes and nights when the room whirled and you needed to look at the wall to make it stop, nights in bed, drunk, when you knew that that was all there was, and the strange excitement of waking and not knowing who it was with you, and the world all unreal in the dark and so exciting that you must resume again unknowing and not caring in the night, sure that this was all and all and all and not caring. Suddenly to care very much and to sleep to wake with it sometimes morning and all that had been there gone and everything sharp and hard and clear and sometimes a dispute about the cost. Sometimes still pleasant and fond and warm and breakfast and lunch. Sometimes all niceness gone and glad to get out on the street but always another day starting and then another night.

I have come here to chew BUBBLEGUM and kick ass

"Guess Things Happen That Way" - Johnny Cash lyrics and video

"Guess Things Happen That Way"

Well you ask me if I'll forget my baby.
I guess I will, someday.
I don't like it but I guess things happen that way.
You ask me if I'll get along.
I guess I will, someway.
I don't like it but I guess things happen that way.

God gave me that girl to lean on,
then he put me on my own.
Heaven help me be a man
and have the strength to stand alone.
I don't like it but I guess things happen that way.

You ask me if I'll miss her kisses.
I guess I will, everyday.
I don't like it but I guess things happen that way.
You ask me if I'll find another.
I don't know. I can't say.
I don't like it but I guess things happen that way.

God gave me that girl to lean on,
then he put me on my own.
Heaven help me be a man
and have the strength to stand alone.
I don't like it but I guess things happen that way.

Kids and Animals "Dirty City"

I think the sky looks pretty
With all this fog in a dirty city
And I know how far we have to fall
I think the girls look pretty
With bad skin in a dirty city
And I know what's coming to us all
It ain't pretty

I think the sky looks pretty
With all this fog in a dirty city
And I know how far we have to fall
I think the girls look pretty
With bad skin in a dirty city
And I know what's coming to us all
But don't worry

God said let the light
Make you beautiful all right
And god damnit it was so
God said let the light
Make you beautiful all right
And god damnit it was so

I think the sky looks pretty
With all this fog in a dirty city
And I know how far we have to fall
I think the girls look pretty
With bad skin in a dirty city
And I know what's coming to us all
But don't worry

God said let the light
Make you beautiful all right
And god damnit it was so
God said let the light
Make you beautiful all right
And god damnit it was so

Stars are just exploding ghosts
And I like books about dogs the most
Cause dogs come from the fire too
And all my god damn dreams are coming true
I find myself falling in the strangest places
And whole wide world speaks a different language
The stars all start to fall apart
To the tenor of your breaking heart

I QUE ES LA VERITAT?

Taken by me at La Sagrada Familia

Finally! Media of my own! I took this photo at the Passion facade of La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. An amazing church designed by Antoni Gaudi, this place left me awestruck and will most certainly be mentioned in future posts.

"I que es la veritat?" Catalan for "And what is the truth?" refers to a conversation between Pontius Pilate and Jesus in John 18:37-38:

New American Standard Bible
Therefore Pilate said to Him, "So You are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say correctly that I am a king For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice." Pilate said to Him, "What is truth?" And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews and said to them, "I find no guilt in Him."

Good News Bible
So Pilate asked him, "Are you a king, then?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. I was born and came into the world for this one purpose, to speak about the truth. Whoever belongs to the truth listens to me." "And what is truth?" Pilate asked. Then Pilate went back outside to the people and said to them, "I cannot find any reason to condemn him."

I am no religious scholar, but to me, in the New American Standard Bible, Jesus says "Yes, I am a king! I'm here to testify the truth." and in the Good News version, "You're the one who says that I am a king. I'm just here to testify the truth." Much the same, I interpret the subtle difference between "What is the truth?" and "What is truth?" to be very different statements. "Is your charge true, should I send you to be crucified?" versus "What is this construct we call truth?" One is questioning and one is cynical.

In researching this phrase, I also stumbled upon a "highly credible" Yahoo! Answers post referencing the Da Vinci Code and another describing the secret tradition that Jesus was not crucified on the cross, but packed up his things and escaped Jerusalem.

Curiously enough, I knew none of this when I took this photo, and had my own unique interpretation of the phrase. I've taken my share of required religion classes, and found most of them to be interesting, but I'm by no means a zealot. My beliefs have been shaken and shaped by my experiences, and have left me with a lot of uncertainty with what I consider to be "the truth." My inchoate faith maybe be disconcerting to some, but I am quite pleased to be in a constant state of questioning and learning. In fact, I feel the most dangerous forms of faith are the most unquestioning. "I que es la veritat?" is the million-dollar question, and the beauty is that I don't need a clear answer. For the time being, I'll keep learning, asking, and listening.

What an unfortunate waste of black paint (no better way to increase credibility than to misspell judgment).

Bon Iver, "Skinny Love"

I'm going to start out heavy. This song keeps popping up in my life and in my head, and if I don't post it now I will burst.

Come on skinny love, just last the year
Pour a little salt we were never here
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
Staring at the sink of blood and crushed veneer

I tell my love to wreck it all
Cut out all the ropes and let me fall
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
Right in the moment this order's tall

I told you to be patient
I told you to be fine
I told you to be balanced
I told you to be kind
And in the morning I'll be with you
But it will be a different kind
And I'll be holding all the tickets
And you'll be owning all the fines

Come on skinny love, what happened here?
Suckle on the hope in light brassieres
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
Sullen load is full; so slow on the split

And I told you to be patient
And I told you to be fine
And I told you to be balanced
And I told you to be kind
And now all your love is wasted
Then who the hell was I?
And I'm breaking at the britches
And at the end of all your lines

Who will love you?
Who will fight?
Who will fall far behind?

Purpose of this blog

I've been trying to find a way to streamline my blog theme for Theo in the City, and focus on my experiences in Minneapolis and other cities, but I keep catching myself posting photos and quotes I fancy. In my quest for consistency, this secondary blog was born. I'll try to cite content that isn't mine, and might even put a thing or two of my own on here!
Stay tuned!
